MagSafe Explained: Everything You Need to Know

MagSafe Explained: Everything You Need to Know

If you’ve bought an iPhone in the last few years, you’ve probably heard the word MagSafe thrown around. But what exactly is it, how does it work, and why does it matter when choosing a phone case? This guide covers everything you need to know.

What Is MagSafe?

MagSafe is Apple’s magnetic attachment and wireless charging system, built into iPhone 12 and all later models. It uses a ring of precisely arranged magnets embedded in the back of the iPhone to snap accessories into perfect alignment every time — instantly and effortlessly.

Apple originally used the MagSafe name for its MacBook magnetic charging cables, but relaunched it in 2020 as a completely new ecosystem for iPhone, focused on magnetic accessories and faster wireless charging.

How Does MagSafe Work?

Inside every MagSafe-compatible iPhone is a circular array of magnets surrounding a wireless charging coil. When you bring a MagSafe accessory close to the back of your iPhone, the magnets snap together with a satisfying click, aligning perfectly for charging or attachment.

MagSafe accessories also contain an NFC chip that communicates with your iPhone, allowing it to recognise what’s attached and respond accordingly — for example, displaying a wallet animation when you snap on a MagSafe wallet.

Which iPhones Support MagSafe?

MagSafe is supported on the following iPhone models:

  • iPhone 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13, 13 Mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max
  • iPhone 17, 17 Air, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max

Older iPhones (iPhone 11 and earlier) do not have built-in MagSafe magnets, though third-party magnetic rings can be added to make them partially compatible with some accessories.

MagSafe Charging: How Fast Is It?

MagSafe supports faster wireless charging than standard Qi charging. Here’s how the speeds compare:

  • MagSafe charging – up to 25W on iPhone 16 Pro models (15W on most other models)
  • Standard Qi wireless charging – up to 7.5W on iPhone
  • Wired charging – up to 27W with a compatible adapter

To get the fastest MagSafe charging speeds, you’ll need an Apple-certified MagSafe charger and a compatible power adapter (20W or higher recommended).

What MagSafe Accessories Are Available?

One of the biggest advantages of MagSafe is the growing ecosystem of accessories that snap on and off in seconds. Popular MagSafe accessories include:

  • MagSafe Chargers – Snap on for fast, aligned wireless charging without fumbling with cables
  • MagSafe Wallets – Attach a card wallet directly to the back of your iPhone
  • MagSafe Mounts – Car mounts, desk stands, and tripod mounts that hold your iPhone securely
  • MagSafe Battery Packs – Portable power banks that attach magnetically to the back of your phone
  • MagSafe Cases – Cases with built-in magnets that maintain full MagSafe compatibility while protecting your iPhone

Does a Phone Case Affect MagSafe?

This is one of the most common questions — and the answer depends entirely on the case. A regular non-MagSafe case can weaken or block the magnetic connection, reducing charging speed and making accessories harder to attach securely.

A MagSafe-compatible case, on the other hand, is designed with a built-in magnet array that aligns perfectly with your iPhone’s magnets. This means:

  • Full MagSafe charging speed is maintained
  • All MagSafe accessories snap on securely through the case
  • The NFC chip in accessories still communicates with your iPhone
  • Your iPhone stays protected without sacrificing any MagSafe functionality

If you use MagSafe accessories regularly, a MagSafe-compatible case is essential — not optional.

What to Look for in a MagSafe Case

Not all MagSafe cases are created equal. When choosing one, look for:

  • Certified magnet strength – Ensure the case uses a full magnet array, not just a single magnet
  • Drop protection – MagSafe compatibility shouldn’t come at the cost of protection
  • Slim profile – The best MagSafe cases protect without adding unnecessary bulk
  • Precise cutouts – Full access to buttons, ports, and cameras
  • Wireless charging pass-through – Confirm the case doesn’t block standard Qi charging either

MagSafe vs. Qi: What’s the Difference?

Qi is the universal wireless charging standard used by most smartphones. MagSafe is Apple’s proprietary system built on top of Qi, adding the magnetic alignment layer and faster charging speeds. All MagSafe chargers are Qi-compatible, but not all Qi chargers support MagSafe speeds or magnetic attachment.

Is MagSafe Worth It?

If you own an iPhone 12 or later, MagSafe is absolutely worth embracing. The magnetic ecosystem makes everyday tasks — charging, mounting in the car, attaching a wallet — faster and more seamless. Once you’ve used a MagSafe mount in your car, going back to a friction mount feels like a step backwards.

The key is making sure your case supports it. A great MagSafe case is the foundation of the entire ecosystem.
